Duties
The position of Highway Investigator is responsible for organizing and coordinating the investigation of highway transportation crashes and developing and presenting reports with highway safety recommendations for adoption by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Duties and responsibilities include: At the GS-11 Level: Serving as a General Highway Investigator on field and major highway crash investigations.
Securing and analyzing evidence necessary to thoroughly investigate pertinent crash events before, during, and after a collision.
Documenting on-scene evidence through use of photography and/or electronic mapping equipment including the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, and interviewing operators, witnesses, or vehicle occupants involved in the crash.
Writing and completing factual reports, exhibits, outlines and analytical reports.
Determining appropriate methods for documentation and collection of physical evidence, scene data, recorded vehicle and infrastructure data, vehicle damage, and records factual crash data.
Conducting surveys and special studies on highway crashes or other highway related transportation events and responsible for the preparation of accurate and effective reports.
Participating in all planning and strategy meetings related to an investigation and its report.
Orally presenting the technical views/facts of an investigation before the full Board for acceptance, rejection, modification, or further study.
Establishing and maintaining liaison, providing consultation, and exchanging information concerning highway safety with other federal agencies, industry, labor, manufacturers, national and professional organizations, associations, etc.
